The Cup That Counts...
2nd April …Rings a bell??? Well
quite yes, coz a year ago this day witnessed history being created…As Dhoni
cleared the fence for a four and Yuvraj had an immense outburst putting his
closely guarded emotional side on display, As the Indian cricket team members
walked around the Wankhede stadium carrying Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulders
amidst loud cheers from fans and celebrities ,the camera focusing time and
again on a teary-eyed Tendulkar...This was no ordinary celebration on an extra
ordinary day ;WE HAD WON THE CRICKET WORLD CUP…And with the very thought of that special moment these
scenes flash across our minds, triggering those emotions which went out of
control on that special day ... This was a
moment for Indians to cherish whole through their life, a moment which ushered
a wave of patriotism and a moment which once again made us all proud of the
fact that we are Indian.
Millions of Indians ,even those who were not
really keen followers of the game had followed the cricket world cup closely keeping their fingers
crossed for an Indian win…And talking about myself, an ardent follower of the game,
this win meant more than anything else under the sun…The memories of the 03 WC where India lost to Australia in
the finals had an agonizing effect on a newbie who had just started following
the game…And 07 WC which crashed all my hopes had
made my approach cynical towards this World Cup…India’s not so great performance before the event coupled with
my hatred for Dhoni made me say “Had it not been for Sachin Tendulkar,I would never want India to win the Cup coz ultimately Dhoni would
walk away with all the credit”…But all this while I followed every single match despite my
10th std examination, jumping with joy at the highs and banging my
fists at the lows…Those intense moments during the finals where I paraded in
the living room reciting the hanuman chalisa with crossed fingers, screamed with anguish following Virat
Kohli’s dismissal, and jumped off the sofa sobbing hysterically as Dhoni’s
willow wielded the winning runs, were good enough to convince me of the fact
that for me; this win mattered much more than it seemed to.
Nostalgia grips me as I recall those couple of
sleepless nights where I cried, cried like never before thinking of the World
Cup Win…The fact that chicken never tasted better than the one I had on that
historic night..It’s been a year and all this while, Indian cricket has been
through major ups and downs but those memories remain fresh as ever…Ah!! I wish
I wish I wish the same magic to be recreated after another three years but this
time with Virat Kohli as the Captain…
