NOT THE NEXT GOD!!!

It was early 2008 and the Indian cricket team had defeated Australia hands down in the Commonwealth Bank (CB) series…While the senior team had registered an emphatic win against the best ODI team in the world, the under-19 team was scripting another success story simultaneously…Under Virat Kohli’s captaincy the team had clinched the under19 world cup after a gap of eight years, Kohli himself being the Man of the tournament…This was my first brush with the handsome young lad who did manage to give me a couple of sleepless nights(candid confession on my part :P)…In spite of such a huge achievement ,Kohli came under the scanner from fans and critics alike given his aggression and unusual temperament, something which could play spoilsport in his dream to make it big…

Keeping the technical aspects aside, Virat Kohli had indeed managed to bowl over a 13 yr old that was me , a craze that continues well till date…Out of admiration for  Kohli I remember making a statement that “ He is the next Sachin tendulkar”...But little did I know that 4 years down the line, people would  actually start to believe so and ironically I wouldn’t…His recent knocks have been exceptionally brilliant which have testified his incredible potential and at the same time shown all those people who mocked at me for my admiration for Kohli that; Deepshi can never go wrong…sounds juvenile, but then can’t really help it…But  by jumping the gun and declaring him “the next god of cricket” media and critics are putting their “half-baked” brains on display…There are no two ways about the fact that Kohli has been consistent throughout his career, and his recent form  especially ,has been incredible…BUT those empty minds need to remember that The greatness of a player cannot be assessed on his form but his “class” and Sachin Tendulkar has that class which Kohli still needs to cultivate…He still has a long way to go and the correct assessment about his stature and comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar or any other great cricketer for that matter would be justified only after he has played at least a decade of cricket.

Talking of cricket one thing certainly cannot be ignored and that is Bangladesh’s recent performances…The tiny team which caused a major upset in the world cup 2007 once again repeated history and became the reason for India’s exit in the recently concluded Asia cup…But their win against Sri Lanka and the manner in which they gave a tough fight to Asia cup winners Pakistan in the finals showed that their win against India was not a mere flash in the pan…More than the Bangladesh cricketers who sobbed hysterically following their defeat in the finals I was dejected coz I believed that they truly deserved to win…But at the end of the day It was a great respite for a cricket fanatic like me, getting to watch some really good cricket and seeing a team like Bangladesh rise to the occasion and silence all those who had taken them to task…well it was matter of hard luck and all I can say is BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME
