Goodbye to the Great Wall
Was it
the right time? Well, this was the only thought that flashed across my mind as
news channels broke the news of Rahul Dravid’s retirement from international
cricket…Although rumors, regarding the fact that “the wall” had decided to quit the longer and
the only version of the game of which he was a part had been doing the rounds
way before the actual announcement, I had sincere hopes that this wouldn’t be
the case...
Considering
the fact that at 38,dravid was old and weary, not suitable for a game that
demanded so much of stamina and his recent performances fuelled the fire that
he was “past his prime”, his retirement was justified…Yet his
decision to hang up his boots did not go down too well with me…There are no two
ways about the fact that as a player, as a cricketer ,RAHUL DRAVID was a class
apart….A cut above the rest, a player who always let his bat do the talking...And the reason
why I am singing praises for him stems from the fact that as a cricket fanatic,
I had admired the way he played…He had never been aggressive, yet he was flamboyant
…He was slow and apparently “not so entertaining” yet he was an interesting watch for people who adored the game in the true sense…Precisely
,he was a visual treat..
Ahh!!! I
am gripped with nostalgia as I write this blog which intensifies as I recall
some of his superb knocks in international cricket…And the reason which
prompted him to take a stand, out of nowhere and bid adieu to the game…Well it
was a matter of personal choice and as Dravid has always been “humility
personified” he called it quits gracefully, creating a void, so large that it
will be impossible to fill... And as far as I am concerned, I will definitely
take time to come to terms with the fact that Now there will be no one to take
the team through from “a spot of
bother” to a position with an “edge”…
As of now
I can only say that “Jammy, we will miss you”….
